GENERAL INFORMATION

Service procedures contained in this section ha ve, wherever possible, been combined into a logical sequence of operations. If this sequence is adopted, with perhaps some modifications to suit the particular workshop policy and layout, operations can be performed with maximum efficiency.

Lubrication and Maintenance scheduled intervals stat ing time as well as distance, should be conducted at the time the first event occurs (refer Section 1 for schedule). Items marked with an asterisk (*) are "Mandatory Main tenance" items which must be performed at the specified time to assure the continued proper functioning of the emission control system.

UNDER HOOD OPERATIONS Brake System Fluid Reservoir

The tandem brake master cylinder supplies hydraulic brake fluid to the dual circuit braking system. The fluid level in the reservoirs should be up to the level marked on the outside of the reservoir casting. Some lowering of the level will occur normally, however, rapid lowering of the level should be investigated immediately. When top ping up, it is imperative that replacement fluid is taken from a sealed container, ensuring minimum exposure to atmosphere. Absolute cleanliness must be observed during the level checking and topping up operations.

Automatic Transmission Fluid Level

The dipstick is located in the right rear section of the engine compartment. To check the level, use the following procedure:

1-2-3

NOTE: The transmission must be at normal operat ing temperature to obtain an accurate dipstick reading.

Install the dipstick into the filler tube, withdraw and check level. The level must be within the marks on the dipstick.

CAUTION: Avoid entry of dirt into the transmission by ensuring that the dipstick is properly seated. Maintaining the transmission to the correct level with the recommended fluid is essential for cor reet operation of the unit.

Manual Steering Gear

Steering gear grease is used for the initial fill lubricant at the factory. Clean the filler plug area before removing the plug to inspect lubricant level. The lubricant should completely cover the internal moving parts. For top up purposes, use the specified gear oil. '

• Power Steering , " '

Before removing the dipstick, wipe the area around it thoroughly to prevent dirt from falling into the reservoir.

When fluid is cold, the level should be just below the "full" mark; when the fluid is hot, the level should be at the "full" mark.

If the fluid level is low, top up with the specified hydraulic fluid. This fluid is specially forrnulated.formini mum effect on rubber hoses.

Battery Terminals

Remove battery cable clamps and thoroughly clean battery terminals and cable clamps. Smear terminals with petroleum jelly, then refit and tighten terminal clamps.
